The Gulbenkian is one of Lisbon’s main cultural venues and a place worth visiting for its excellent exhibitions, concerts and activities. It has a unique museum surrounded by a beautiful romantic garden.

The Garden

One of Lisbon’s most iconic parks is the Gulbenkian Garden, a unique place with various ambiances that you should wander until finding the ideal spot for a rest.

Designed in 1957, the garden has a pond and a small stream, various paths winding their way between the different plant species, a magnificent open-air amphitheatre where you can see plays and concerts, and spots just to sit and read a book.

If you have the time, the gardens are also a great place for a picnic.

The Museum

Regarded as one of the best museums in Portugal, the Gulbenkian’s two collections will take you from Ancient Egypt to the present day. The Founder’s Collection and the Modern Collection both have their own specific presentation, but there is interaction between them too, in the form of temporary exhibitions and projects. These set up dialogues across time, between different kinds of art and artefacts, and between East and West.

Dating from 1940, when the world was at war and Lisbon remained at peace, this is a monumental fountain placed in the center of a new neighborhood at the time, the “Avenidas Novas.” It’s made up of a large basin where the water falls from the upper platforms, and of several sculptures: Triton on horseback and four mermaids.

The name (“luminous fountain”) derives from the light show that happens every night (15 minutes after sunset), but there are also “water shows” every afternoon and night.

Hours

The water shows

Every day from 11AM to 1PM and from 6PM to 8PM. Lights turn on daily 15 minutes after solar twilight.
